Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is close to painless until it is advanced. Caught early it is reversible. Caught late it costs teeth. We treat it at every stage at our Watchung Ave office.

Signs to take seriously
If you recognize two or three of these, get the gums checked rather than waiting for pain.
Bleeding when you brush
Healthy gums do not bleed. Blood in the sink is inflammation, and it is the earliest warning you get — and the easiest stage to reverse.
Persistent bad breath
Bacteria living in pockets below the gumline produce an odor that mouthwash covers for an hour and never fixes.
Receding gums
Teeth that look longer than they used to, or sensitivity at the gumline, mean tissue has pulled back and exposed root surface.
Loose or shifting teeth
A tooth that moves, or a bite that suddenly feels different, means the bone holding it has been lost. This stage needs treatment now.
Swollen or tender gums
Puffy, red, sore tissue — especially if it is worse in one area — points to infection rather than brushing too hard.
Pus or a bad taste
Any discharge around a tooth is an active infection and should be looked at within days, not months.
How we treat it
Measure, then decide
We chart the depth of the pocket around every tooth and take x-rays to see the bone. Those numbers tell us the stage — and they give you something to compare against next visit.
Deep cleaning
Scaling and root planing removes tartar and bacteria from the root surfaces below the gumline, usually with the area numbed. This is the core treatment for most patients.
Let it heal, then re-measure
Four to six weeks later we re-chart. Pockets that have tightened mean it is working. Areas that have not respond to further treatment or a referral.
Maintenance
Once gums are stable, cleanings every three to four months keep them that way. Gum disease is managed rather than cured, and the maintenance interval is what holds the line.
Insurance and payment
Periodontal treatment is covered by most dental plans, though usually at a different percentage than a routine cleaning.
- We accept most major dental insurance plans and will check your periodontal benefits before treatment.
- We do not accept Medicaid at this time.
- Deep cleanings are often done in two visits, one side at a time, and quoted in writing first.
- Maintenance cleanings are billed differently from standard cleanings — we will explain what your plan allows per year.
Common questions
Can gum disease be reversed?
The early stage, gingivitis, is fully reversible with a cleaning and better home care. Once it has progressed to periodontitis and bone has been lost, that bone does not grow back — treatment stops the damage where it is. Which is why the bleeding stage matters.
Is a deep cleaning painful?
The area is numbed, so the appointment itself is comfortable. Gums are usually tender for a day or two afterward and teeth can be temporarily sensitive to cold as inflammation settles.
Why do I need cleanings every three months now?
Because the pockets around your teeth are deeper than normal, bacteria repopulate them faster than the usual six-month interval allows. The shorter interval is what keeps the disease from advancing again.
My gums stopped bleeding. Am I fine?
Not necessarily. Bleeding often stops as the disease becomes chronic, and smokers frequently do not bleed at all. The only way to know is measuring the pockets.
Will I lose teeth?
Most patients who get treated and keep up with maintenance do not. Teeth that are already very loose from advanced bone loss are a different conversation, and we will have it with you straight.
