What counts as a dental emergency
If you are in real pain, bleeding, or a tooth has moved or broken, do not wait for it to settle down. Call us.
Severe toothache
Pain that wakes you at night, throbs, or does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief usually means infection or nerve involvement — both get worse, not better.
Knocked-out tooth
The most time-sensitive emergency there is. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, keep it moist, and get to us within the hour if you can.
Broken or chipped tooth
A sharp edge can cut your tongue and an exposed inner layer is a fast track to infection. Save any pieces and bring them with you.
Lost filling or crown
The tooth underneath is unprotected and often extremely sensitive. Keep the crown — it can frequently be re-cemented rather than replaced.
Swelling or a dental abscess
Facial swelling, a bad taste, or a pimple-like bump on the gum points to infection. This needs treatment quickly, not a wait-and-see week.
Bleeding that will not stop
Some oozing after an extraction is normal. Bleeding that soaks through gauze after an hour of firm pressure is not — call us.
What to do right now
Call us before you drive over
A two-minute call lets us prepare the room, the x-ray and the right dentist for your problem — and lets us tell you what to do in the meantime.
For a knocked-out adult tooth
Pick it up by the crown. Rinse gently with milk or saline, never scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk, and come straight in.
For pain and swelling
Cold compress on the outside of the cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 off. Take pain relief as directed on the package. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.
For bleeding
Fold clean gauze, bite down firmly for 20 uninterrupted minutes, and keep your head elevated. Avoid rinsing, spitting and straws.
Go to the emergency room instead if…
You have swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, a suspected broken jaw, a serious facial injury, or bleeding you cannot control. A hospital ER is the right place for those — call us afterward and we will take over the dental side of the care.
What it costs, and insurance
An emergency visit starts with an exam and an x-ray so we can tell you exactly what is wrong before anything is done. You will hear the price before we begin treatment.
- We accept most major dental insurance plans and will submit the claim for you.
- We do not accept Medicaid at this time.
- Many emergency visits are resolved in one appointment; if further treatment is needed you get a written plan.
- Our first goal is always to relieve the pain and save the tooth where saving it is realistic.
Common questions
Can I be seen today?
Often, yes. We hold time for urgent cases and will fit you in the same day whenever the schedule allows. Call 908-641-2833 as early in the day as you can — morning calls are far more likely to get a same-day slot.
What do I do if it is after hours or the weekend?
Call our number and follow the instructions on the message for urgent care. If you have severe swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a facial injury, go to the nearest emergency room instead of waiting.
Can a knocked-out tooth really be saved?
Frequently, if you act fast. The best outcomes happen when the tooth is back in its socket within 30 to 60 minutes. Keep it moist in milk or saline — never let it dry out and never scrub the root.
Will you just pull the tooth?
Only when it cannot be saved. Most emergencies are treated with a filling, a crown, re-cementing a restoration, or a root canal that keeps the tooth. We will explain the options and let you decide.
