What preventive care covers
A checkup is more than a polish. Here is what a visit actually includes.
Routine cleaning
Removal of the plaque and tartar that brushing cannot reach, above and just below the gumline, followed by a polish. Recommended every six months.
Deep cleaning
Scaling and root planing for patients whose gums have started to pull away from the teeth. It treats early gum disease before it costs you bone.
Exam and digital x-rays
We check every tooth, your bite, old fillings and the bone around the roots. Digital imaging finds decay between teeth long before you feel it.
Oral cancer screening
A quick look at the tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth and throat at every checkup. It takes two minutes and it is the reason we do it every time.
Fluoride and sealants
Extra protection for patients prone to decay and for children's back teeth, where the grooves are deep enough to trap food a toothbrush cannot clear.
Night guards
If you clench or grind, a custom guard protects your enamel and existing dental work. Worn teeth are one of the most common things we see and the easiest to stop.
What a checkup visit looks like
Tell us what is going on
Any sensitivity, bleeding gums or a tooth you have been avoiding. Even if nothing hurts, say when you were last seen — it changes what we look for.
Exam and imaging
X-rays if you are due, then a full check of teeth, gums, bite and soft tissue. You will see what we see.
The cleaning itself
Scaling, polishing and a review of the spots you are missing at home. Most patients are in and out in under an hour.
A plan, if you need one
If we find something, you get the options and the cost in writing before anything is scheduled. If we do not, we book your next visit and you are done.
Insurance and payment
Preventive care is the best-covered treatment in dentistry — most plans pay for two cleanings and exams a year, often at 100%.
- We accept most major dental insurance plans and will check your benefits and submit the claim for you.
- We do not accept Medicaid at this time.
- No insurance? Ask us what a cleaning and exam costs when you call — you will get a number, not a runaround.
- Deep cleanings are quoted separately and in writing before treatment starts.
Common questions
How often do I really need a cleaning?
Every six months for most people. If you have gum disease, smoke, or have had a lot of dental work, we may recommend every three or four months. It is a judgment call we make with you, not a rule we apply to everyone.
It has been years since my last visit. Is it too late?
No, and you are not the first. We start with an exam and x-rays, deal with anything urgent, and work through the rest at a pace you are comfortable with. Nobody here is going to lecture you.
What is the difference between a regular and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning treats healthy gums above the gumline. A deep cleaning goes beneath it to remove tartar from the root surfaces when gums have started to detach. The second is treatment for gum disease, not routine maintenance.
Does a cleaning hurt?
Usually not. If your gums are inflamed or you have sensitive roots it can be uncomfortable, and we can numb the area. Tell the hygienist — there is no reason to sit through it.
Do you see children?
Yes. We see families, and children's checkups include fluoride and sealants where they help. Our team is bilingual, so parents and kids can both follow what is happening. Se habla español.
